Hot Tomato-Onion Chutney/Hot Tomato-Onion Dip

Here’s a quick and easy recipe for Tomato-Onion chutney/dip, preparation time under 5 min.

Surprise guests?  Tiring day? Boring day? Lazy day? Moody day?  Fridge empty? This is a simple dip for any type of bread, rotis/parathas, idli or dosa or even potato/tortilla chips.  Require just a single tomato and onion plus 1-2 red chili that’s all.


Tomato – 1

Onion – 1

Garlic clove – 1

Dried Red chili – 3-4 (or 2 – depending on how hot you want)

Black pepper – 1-2 tsp



Olive oil – 1 tsp


Chop the onion, garlic and tomato.

Heat a tsp of olive oil in a pan and saute the red chili first.  Add the chopped onion, garlic and tomato finally.  Stir-fry for 1-2 minutes until moisture is almost fully absorbed.  Cool for a minute.

Blend with water in a mixer to a smooth paste.  Add water if required.

Transfer contents to the wok and heat again on a low flame for a minute or two, adding black pepper and salt.  Add water if required.  Boil to your desired consistency and switch off flame.  Let cool and transfer to a bowl.

This is hot tomato-onion chutney/dip.  Typical handy aid on a real busy day.
