Shankar Mahadevan’s moving tribute to his mother on stage – ‘Meri Maa’ from Aamir Khan’s ‘Taare Zameen Par’

‘RAJA PAARVAI’ – the unforgettable classic starring Kamal Hassan and Madhavi:

The tamil film ‘Raja Parvai’ (a king’s sight), a classic with Kamal Haasan, a very young hero then, was shot in my mother’s school.  He acted as a blind boy who grows up in their hostel in the picture. A beautiful violin medly from the pic. Worldclass stuff from maestro Ilayaraja, who has performed for the London Philharmonic.

and also the opening concert in the pic – mindblowing:

The blind section in my mom’ school comes in the scene minute 24.30 exact in the following video.  Yes my mom saw the shoot.

This picture so naturally is too very special to me. Along with its music. My mom did not live long after the release of the pic (which she watched in cinemas with my dad).

Two great romantic songs from the pic which are also my favourites: (these are not just my favourites, my mom had them recorded in an audio ‘tdk’ cassette (she and her 2-in-1 Sanyo were inseparable) I had painstakingly kept alive up until 1993 – 13 years after she had left before the reels gave out. Besides this were her other favourites from those times: from films like ‘Ek duje ke liye” ‘Choti si baath’ and some Tamil hits.

Romance & Monsoons, what a combi! Love this one.

‘Azhage, Azhagu’ (meaning beautiful, beautiful).  K.J.Yesudas beautiful romance indeed sung for Ilayaraja. (solo)

May be this is the same time Yesudas also sang for bollywood?  Love his ‘jaaneman janeman’ and ‘jab deep jale aanaa’ – my all time favourites from the same period, as well as my mom’s:  (Shame his tamil renditions remain unknown to the world.)

Amazing to note that these romantic tamil/hindi songs/music still remain so vividly green in our memory. Missed this stuff for an intervening period, but thanks to You Tube, I am able to reconnect back to this other world.

What is mere filmi music to others is like one of those few rare connecting bonds between my mom and I.
