Brain-boosting Brahmi – ‘Vallarai Keerai’ Greens of Tamil Nadu…

August 1, 2014

‘Vallara Keerai’ – known by botonical name  Centella asiatica and Brahmi in Hindi is known for its brain-boosting abilities, as claimed by the ‘Ayurveda’ and ‘Siddha’ traditional medicines of India, in practice for over thousands of years. Including ‘Brahmi’ once a week in our diet, helps us improve our memory power. This is of immense benefit especially to school-going children and college students.

‘Vallarai’ juice is a refreshing drink one can have after a jog/walk in the Marina in Chennai. Very popular among our early morning beach-goers.

Brahmi/Vallarai is also known for many other health benefits:

I make a mash of this brahmi/vallarai with dal (lentils) regularly and that makes it palatable and yummy. Plus this way, it is easy to have the greens as either a subzi for our rotis or even with plain rice.

Ingredients:

Vallarai Keerai/Brahmi leaves – 1 bunch (since this is a rare medicinal plant, the bunches or leaves come small and limited in size)

Onion – 1

Tomato – 1

Garlic pods – 2 or 3

Green chilli – 1

Toor dal/lentils (pigeon pea) – 1/2 cup

Water

Salt

Turmeric powder a pinch

For tempering: 1/2 tsp of mustard seeds, cumin seeds, a tsp of oil plus a dried red chili

Method:

Pretty much the usual keerai/greens masiyal/mash.

1. Rinse the dal and take it in a small pressure cooker with enough water.

2. Add a pinch of turmeric to it.

3. Grate the onion, tomato, green chili and garlic and add to the dal.

4. Rinse the brahmi leaves/vallarai keerai and add on top.

5. Pressure cook to soft.

6. After release of pressure, add everything to an earthen pot and mash the traditional way to a smooth consistency.

7. For tempering, take a tsp of oil in mini wok and heat it. Add the mustard and cumin seeds and the red chili (torn and de-seeded). When everything splutter, add to the mashed vallarai keerai/brahmi-dal mash.

8. Add salt and stir well.

9. Vallarai Keerai Masiyal/Brahmi-Dal mash is ready to serve. Serve hot with anything – rotis/parathas or rice.

10.Excellent memory booster for kids. The results are observable in children by thrice a week of taking it, for 6 months to 1 year.

11. Natural way to boost memory. Great traditional Indian medicine/medicinal herb/therapeutic cuisine from ‘Ayurveda.’
